It's worth noting that most ships do not dock in Tokyo proper, but in Yokohama, a separate city around 20 miles southwest from Tokyo. Though few cruisers will be visiting Japan to see Yokohama, this venerable port city has a number of attractions in its own right, most of which are a short stroll from where your ship is docked. Many of the red-brick waterfront warehouses have been converted into attractions, such as museums, restaurants and bars, and make for an interesting walk if you haven't built in time to visit Tokyo itself. Even if you've spent lots of time in other big cities, there is no way to adequately prepare for Tokyo. The sprawling modern metropolis is a dizzying kaleidoscope of flashing neon lights, pachinko (gaming) parlors, karaoke joints, standing sushi restaurants, robot hotels, maid cafes, tiny bars and basement noodle restaurants dotting its busy streets. But quiet spots do exist throughout the city. Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples are great spots to stop and think about all you've seen, and there are a number of city center parks where you can find a secluded area. But don't wonder too far afield -- you'll likely hit a high-end and name-brand shop before you see the next peaceful oasis. The Japanese take shopping very seriously, dedicating entire districts to it, like high-end Ginza or electronic-centric Akihabara. And their malls aren't just places to buy things; you'll find some of the best restaurants there, like Skytree Town at the foot of the 2,080-foot Skytree Tower -- as well as an aquarium and planetarium. The good thing is that Tokyo is an amazingly easy city to get around. The massive metro and train system covers nearly every inch of the city, and though few people speak English, they will do their best to help if you just ask.

Kobe, Japan's fifth-largest city, lies on the southern side of the main island of Honshu. With a population of 1.5 million, the city only grew to prominence relatively recently, in the Meiji period, as a port for foreign trade.

Kobe sits on a narrow spit of land between the Rokko mountain chain and the coast. Mount Rokko is a dormant volcano and dominates the approach to Kobe at an elevation of more than 3,000 feet. It is a popular fall tourist site for Japanese leaf-peepers.

Two artificial islands, Port Island and Rokko Island, have been built out into the harbor to allow space in the city for a modern airport and further development.

In the 13th century, Kobe was known as Hyogo Port and traded extensively with China. In 1868, at the end of Japan's period of self-imposed seclusion, Hyogo Port was reopened to foreign trade and was soon home to a considerable European enclave. The houses of these merchants and diplomats can be found today in Kobe's Kitano area.

Kobe's new 19th-century name derives from kanbe, an archaic name for those who supported the Ikuta Shrine. This Shinto shrine is one of the oldest in Japan. The stretch of coastline around Kobe was famous for the shrine before the city developed.

The city was fire-bombed in 1945, destroying more than a fifth of all buildings. Thirty years later, Kobe's city council passed an ordinance banning vessels carrying nuclear weapons from the port. This ruling, known as the "Kobe Formula," effectively prevents U.S. warships from entering the port because the U.S. Navy has a policy of not disclosing which of its warships are nuclear-armed.

Until 1995, Kobe was Japan's busiest port, but the Great Hanshin Earthquake destroyed much of the old port and killed 6,434 people. The earthquake is dramatically commemorated in Meriken Park. Despite ambitious rebuilding, Kobe is still only the fourth busiest port in Japan.

Kobe today is a fun place to arrive. You are quickly and suddenly in an attractive recreation area. Meriken Park with its modern art installations and lawns is a pleasant 800-meter walk from your ship. Visitors can enjoy Kobe's Maritime Museum and the iconic red Port Tower. Pay to visit its fifth-floor viewing platform, and you get to see how attractively laid out this city is.

Because of the decisions of the Meiji Emperor (1868 to 1912), Kobe remains a cosmopolitan city. That is why you'll find far more French and Italian restaurants, European bakeries and international supermarkets than you might expect. The European influence has also resulted in the city proving particularly popular with European ex-pats and having much more greenery than most Japanese cities. Kitano-cho, the foreigners' enclave to the north of the city center, reminds American visitors of Boston Common, and English residents of Hampstead. Locals take pride living in Kobe, and you can see why. This is a colorful, lively, friendly place to spend your time.

Osaka is part "Shogun" and part "Lost in Translation." Tidy Buddhist temples rub up against modern hotels and pachinko parlors. In the center of town, the iconic Osaka Castle and its ancient moats and beautiful grounds are ringed by high-rises. Flattened during World War II, Osaka is a tangle of bridges, elevated roadways and skyscrapers, but surprisingly, Ferris wheels are also a big part of Osaka's visual signature, throbbing at night in neon color.

With 2.6 million people, Osaka is Japan's third-largest city after Tokyo and Yokohama. Another 1.5 million businesspeople and students crowd into town on weekdays. The city, located at the mouth of the Odo River on Osaka Bay, has a high energy quotient, which ticks up several notches at night when people spill into the entertainment and restaurant districts. And there are thousands of restaurants. Osaka has a longstanding reputation as "the kitchen of Japan," a culinary mecca known for its hearty cuisine. It's a city, it is joked, where people eat and go broke.

Osaka is also known for its stylish malls and shopping arcades, basically roofed shopping streets. It's a good thing some cruise ships choose to overnight here. With its many dimensions, Osaka is a town to take your time with.

Naha is the largest city in Japan's Okinawa Prefecture -- and one of the country's most well-known. While visitors could spend a week or more exploring the city, there is also much to be seen in a day or two from busy public markets offering local foods to castle ruins to architecturally breathtaking temples, art museums and a historic mausoleum. Okinawa has a fascinating history: As capital of the Ryukyu islands -- which stretch in a 700-mile arc from the Japan's southernmost large island, Kyushu, to within sight of Taiwan (on a clear day) -- the 55 islands were run as an independent kingdom for a hundred years, trading with China, Malaysia and China. As a result, the islands have a culture, cuisine and language distinct from the rest of Japan, with a vibe and a feel more similar to Hawaii (on the same parallel, though 1,100 miles to the east) than the rest of the country. The best-preserved example of the time was the magnificent Shuri Castle, but it tragically burnt down in 2019. In more recent history, Okinawa is best known as the site of a massive Allied invasion in the closing stages of World War II, immortalized in countless books and films. A must-visit attraction is the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum, which recounts the battle. Okinawa is also famous as the birthplace of karate, and you can organize a visit to see a demonstration during your time here. The climate is sub-tropical with year-round temperatures averaging 72 Fahrenheit, with hot, wet summers, while winters are dry and mild. Naha, Okinawa has plans to become a turnaround port (where cruises begin and end) as it's well served by direct flights from Tokyo, Taiwan, mainland China and Hong Kong. According to CLIA's 2016 Asia Cruise Trends Report, the Port of Jeju was the most visited Asia cruise port that year, with more than 450 calls and 1.2 million passengers visiting its shores. Port officials have set a goal to double the number of calls to receive 2 million cruise tourists by 2020. However, since March 15, 2017, cruise ships departing from a Chinese port have been prohibited from calling on Korean ports. Since 90 percent of cruise visitors to Korea are from China, Jeju and other Korean cruise ports have taken a significant hit with far fewer cruise ships calling on the port since. Jeju is South Korea's largest island, located off the Korean Peninsula in Northeast Asia where the Yellow Sea meets the South China Sea. From its unique history and traditional female divers to its natural scenic beauty and modern K-pop culture, Jeju has plenty to offer cruise visitors of all ages. Hallasan, the nation's tallest mountain and the volcanic island's centrepiece, stands at 1,950 meters or approximately 6,400 feet. Although the island was created by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, it has not erupted in centuries. Jeju Island is South Korea's only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site and features a unique set of lava tubes and spacious caves -- one of which, Manjanggul Lava Tube, is open for tourists to explore. Jeju also features unique museums and theme parks and was once was a popular honeymoon destination for mainland Korean couples -- many of whom were the result of arranged marriages and often lacking in romantic experience. Love Land, an erotic sculpture theme park, pays homage to this history with its interactive, instructional and even humorous displays. Other popular attractions include the Teddy Bear Museum and Mazeland. Jeju Island offers some breathtaking scenic areas. Although they are located on the other side of the island in Seogwipo city, they are well worth the visit. You will have to spend a good bit of time travelling to the other side of the island, and you will most likely have time to see only one or two attractions within your time in port.

Who goes on Celebrity Cruises cruise ships?

Celebrity draws a broad range of travellers, most attracted by the cuisine, unusual entertainment and creative itineraries. Passenger ages typically average in the 50s, with family groups more visible in the summer and during school vacations. The longer and more exotic cruises usually host an older demographic, and the passenger mix varies with the port of embarkation but most are from North America, the U.K., Australia and New Zealand.

Do I have to dress up on a Celebrity Cruises cruise?

Yes and no. The norm on most Celebrity sailings is smart-casual, but in the Galapagos, attire is casual. Despite the daytime casual vibe, you won't find T-shirts, swimsuits, robes, bare feet, tank tops, baseball caps or swimwear in the main restaurant or specialty restaurants at any time. Formal nights (held once on cruises six nights or shorter, twice on longer itineraries) have been replaced by Evening Chic, where anything from cocktail attire to formal wear is appropriate. The dress code also extends to the theatre on those evenings.

Is everything included on Celebrity Cruises cruises?

No. The cruise fare for a Celebrity cruise covers dining in several complimentary venues, including the Main Dining Room, Oceanview Café buffet restaurant, Spa Café, Mast Grill (on most ships) and Seaside Grill. Room service is also complimentary, except for the period between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Passengers staying at certain suite levels have additional complimentary dining privileges, and those staying in AquaClass rooms can dine in the Blu restaurant without charge. Water, basic coffee and tea, and certain juices are provided free of charge, but unless you're booked in certain suite categories, you'll have to pay extra for soft drinks and alcoholic beverages. The extensive entertainment from Broadway-style theatre to circus shows, comedy, magic, dance and live music is all available without charge. The kids' program is also free, though you'll pay extra for babysitting. Shore excursions are not covered by cruise fares, nor are gratuities, spa and salon services and some fitness classes. There is also a fee for Wi-Fi and laundry services.

What are Celebrity Cruises' most popular activities?

On ships with the Lawn Club, hanging out on the grass, whether playing bocce or just relaxing and reading, is one of the most popular activities for Celebrity cruisers. Other popular things to do on these ships is lounge in the adults-only Solarium, hit the Canyon Ranch Spa or participate in wine tasting. Some ships also offer hot glassmaking demonstrations and classes; sign up early for the classes because they fill up fast. On ships without a Lawn Club, relaxing by the pool or in the Solarium is popular, as are the once- or twice-per-cruise Rooftop film and dinner events. At night, Celebrity showcases everything from Vegas-style production shows to comedians and cabaret, drawing a crowd each time. The ships have a robust program for kids, a lot of it centred on edutainment. Many of the activities are offered courtesy of partners like Anturus, Lonely Planet, Xbox, Fat Brain Toys and Budsies.
