How To Pick The Best Cabins

Beccy Miller

Getting your cabin location right is a big thing! Our team of specialists have the know-how to get you the perfect spot, but here are some insider tips, to help you plan ahead...

If you're worried about seasickness...

People often worry about motion sickness if they haven't cruised before, but modern ships come with stabilisers, so it's not so much of a concern these days. That said, if you are prone to motion sickness, the best cabins to pick are mid-ship and lower decks; they don't feel the movement like forward or aft cabins do.

Forward cabins usually bare the brunt of bad seas, as they hit the waves first and the higher you are, the worse that can be.

If you're a light sleeper...

Light sleepers should consider where all the restaurants and entertainment venues are. If you like an early night, plus are easily woken by noise, cabins near the theatre or late-night lounges should be avoided.

The best location for light sleepers would be with passenger cabins above and below you, but watch out for cabins near the lifts, as these can be noisy with fellow passengers going to and fro.

If you like to be close to the action...

Have a think about where you will spend most of your time, this is especially important if you are on a mega-ship or have any mobility issues, as the larger ships can see you rack up the steps quite quickly.

Families might want to try and select cabins close to the kids clubs or splash pools, whilst those travelling without children may want to be as far away from those areas as possible! You might like to be near certain lounges or bars, so a quick study of the deck plan will help you decide what area is best for you.

If you want relaxation and wellness...

Some cruise lines offer special perks to passengers wanting to be near the spa areas and these can include access to a private restaurant and unlimited use of the wellness facilities. You'll also only be a short distance away from that yoga spot or hydrotherapy pool.

This is what our team suggested...

Joy:  On selected P&O and Princess ships there is a deck that juts out that gives you an extra 30 sq foot on your balcony without paying for a higher grade, they are always a good choice.

Mark: I like to be aft-facing. The balconies are often larger and you get amazing views of the wake as you sail along.

Philippa: I always like the port side as I like to see where I am when I wake up. I'll order coffee and pastries to the cabin & sit in my dressing gown and watch the world wake up from my balcony.

Remember, if you're not sure where you would like to be located, ask our friendly team for their advice.
