From cultural Spanish cities to ancient wonders in Rome
Whether you want to introduce the kids to iconic cities and landmarks, help them brush up on their history, or you simply want to experience a mix of culture, coastlines and world capitals in one trip, the right cruise can tick all your boxes. Here’s a handful of the most popular spots to take your tots (and they’re great for multigenerational holidays too).
1. Rome, Italy
The land of ‘living history’, Italy’s list of iconic landmarks and UNESCO-listed World Heritage Sites is hugely impressive. Hone in on Rome, which is included in a large number of Mediterranean itineraries, and you’ve got a recipe for both family fun and educational sightseeing. Start with the city’s ancient stadium, The Colosseum, which teen history buffs will love for its sheer size and interactive tours, while underground passages and trap doors will spark curiosity and imagination for younger family members.
If you have time, be sure to climb up the dome of St Peter’s Basilica. 320 steps follow a narrow spiralling staircase that treat you to panoramas across the Piazza and the Vatican City. Not only are the views well worth the effort, but little legs will feel a sense of accomplishment for conquering the climb. Other highlights include the Vatican Museums for budding art enthusiasts and the kid-friendly Castel Sant’Angelo, which is free entry for children under 18.
Plus, there’s enough pizza and ice cream (gelato) to satisfy an army.

2. The Greek Islands
(Because it's impossible to pick just one)
Blessed with Blue Flag beaches, myth-steeped ruins and outdoor activities, it doesn’t take much planning to keep the little ones amused in the Greek Islands. Super-sized Crete is a ‘something for everyone’ destination, accessorised with family-friendly beaches, deep rocky gorges, grand palaces and charming Venetian harbours. Popular port stops include Heraklion, Chania and Rethymno, where you’ll find historic sites, museums and pretty-as-a-picture old towns.
The emerald island of Corfu is an irresistible outdoor playground for active families. Dust off your walking boots, strap on your cycling helmet, set sail on a boat tour or take to the skies with some adrenaline-pumping parasailing. A stone’s throw away sits Kefalonia, a stunning island carpeted in dense forest, with a wild, mountainous interior – another win-win for nature-loving families. Don’t miss Melissani Cave’s underground lake and stalactite-encrusted chambers, kids are sure to love the boat tour across the dazzling blue water (pictured).

3. Palma, Mallorca

A safe bet for families far and wide, Mallorca is chock-a-block with fun attractions, mountainside towns, outdoor adventures, splash happy water sports and (very) kid-friendly beaches. Palma, the island’s vibrant capital and cruise port, is the cherry on top. Boasting a Gothic cathedral famed for its architecture and colourful rose window that is sure to captivate visitors of all ages, the city is also home to one of the few circular castles in Europe, Bellver Castle.
Many cruise lines also run excursions that appeal to adventure-seeking kids, including Mallorca’s most popular natural wonder, the Caves of Drach. Marvel at the stunning formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and take a boat ride on the underground lake to experience the cave’s ethereal beauty. As a bonus, it’s also a great option to keep the troops cool on a hot summer's day. Another island highlight is the rural town of Sóller, set in a lush valley of orange groves between the mountains and the sea. Take the vintage train from Palma, and be sure to enjoy a ride on the century-old tramway that connects the town to the nearby beach.

4. Barcelona, Spain

A city that needs little introduction, Barcelona has plenty of strings to its bow. Home to unique architecture, cutting-edge galleries, sandy beaches and lively parks, it’s also a favourite amongst families thanks to the aquarium, cable car rides to Montjuïc Castle and the availability of electric bikes. Antoni Gaudi has left his mark across the city, with La Sagrada Família widely acknowledged as his most magnificent masterpiece. The iconic landmark has been under construction for more than 130 years – and it’s still not finished! Children of all ages can enjoy the intricate facades and storytelling elements like turtles, dragons, and the magic square. The colourful UNESCO World Heritage Site of Park Güell is another popular spot, dotted with mosaic benches, whimsical structures and some of the best views of the city.
Of course, no visit to Barcelona would be complete without a stroll through the Gothic Quarter. A treasure trove of history and culture, it offers an immersive experience for families, allowing them to soak up the city’s unique atmosphere. Highlights include Las Ramblas, a vibrant street with street artists, shops and cafes, as well as Barcelona Cathedral and the colourful market, Mercat de la Boqueria.
