Winter Sun in the Atlantic Islands

The clocks go back this weekend, so it's time to search for some vitamin D. A popular choice for us Brits is the Atlantic Islands, predominantly the Canaries, but Cape Verde, the Azores and Maderia are all beautiful too.
The Canary Islands
An enticing blend of Spanish charm and African sunshine, the Canary Islands are scattered like treasures in the Atlantic Ocean. Just off the coast of Africa, the Canary Island's year-round sunshine makes it one of the very best winter sun destinations.
The islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, La Gomera and Fuerteventura, offer some of Europe's most dramatic scenery, from mountainous volcanic landscapes to vast golden sand dunes and charcoal-black shores.
The Azores
The Portuguese island chain of The Azores is the result of 1766 volcanoes (9 of which are still active) being scattered over the junction of the Eurasian, North American and African tectonic plates, making this a geological hotspot.
If you enjoy hiking, then you'll be in heaven as the rugged coastlines offer dramatic scenery and lush, green trails, suitable for levels of fitness. The largest island, Sao Miguel, home to the capital city of Ponta Delgada has a rich history and architectural heritage, with museums and lots of beautiful church for you to explore.
Cape Verde
Some short distance off the coast of West Africa is the beautiful island chain of Cape Verde. The Portuguese settled here in the 15th century, so there’s a mixture of African, Brazilian and Portuguese influence - most present in the island’s architecture, music and food,
The biggest island in the archipelago and the first to be populated, Santiago is rich in history and culture and has a vibrant nightlife. The various mountainous peaks of the island reflect its volcanic origin. The beach of Praia is a must-see as is a trip to Cidade Velha, the old capital, along with the oldest fortress in Cape Verde.
Madeira
The Portuguese island of Madeira, famous as the birthplace of footballer Ronaldo, is another jewel in the Atlantic crown. Relax on the beach, enjoy a variety of watersports or wander down cobbled streets leading to fishing villages, perfect for sampling the catch of the day.
The archipelago’s capital city of Funchal really will take your breath away with its rolling hills, dramatic mountain scenes, year-round blooming gardens and renowned wineries. There are many festivals taking place throughout the year too, the flower festival is a particular highlight.
